I Know I Am, But What Are You? Review

I really like Sarah Silverman and Samantha Bee. I consider them to be two of the funniest people on Comedy Central. So, this was quite a summer for me, with books from both of them. Fans of either will like the books before they even read the books. I enjoyed both.

However...I found that Sarah Silverman's book was closer to what I was expecting than was Samantha Bee's. Silverman's writing style just came across as closer to what I expected from having watched her show. Bee's book, on the other hand, though enjoyable, seemed to me more of a departure from her personality on The Daily Show. To be clear, this is not a complaint...merely an observation. She addresses some pretty serious topics, and handles them well. However, if you are buying Bee's book thinking that her TV personality will be found in her writing, my opinion is that it is not. It's still a good book though, and I would certainly recommend it.

I Know I Am, But What Are You? Overview

Candid, outspoken, laugh-out-loud funny essays from the much-loved Samantha Bee, the Most Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart .

Critics have called her sweet, adorable, and vicious. But there is so much more to be said about Samantha Bee. For one, shes Canadian. Whatever that means. And now, she opens up for the very first time about her checkered Canadian past. With charming candor, she admits to her Lennie from Of Mice and Menstyle love of baby animals, her teenage crime spree as one-half of a car-thieving couple (Bonnie and Clyde in Bermuda shorts and braces), and the fact that strangers seem compelled to show her their genitals. She also details her intriguing career history, which includes stints working in a frame store, at a penis clinic, and as a Japanese anime character in a touring childrens show.

Samantha delves into all these topics and many more in this thoroughly hilarious, unabashedly frank collection of personal essays. Whether detailing the creepiness that ensues when strangers assume that your mom is your lesbian lover, or recalling her girlhood crush on Jesus (who looked like Kris Kristofferson and sang like Kenny Loggins), Samantha turns the spotlight on her own imperfect yet highly entertaining life as relentlessly as she skewers hapless interview subjects on The Daily Show. She shares her unique point of view on a variety of subjects as wide ranging as her deep affinity for old people, to her hatred of hot ham. Its all here, in irresistible prose that will leave you in stitches and eager for more.

Don't be a Doo-bee: Do be a Sam Bee - S. Berner - Cocoa, Fl USA
That Samantha Bee is a supremely gifted performer is obvious to any viewer of "The Daily Show" (it is not EASY getting laughs in your eigth/ninth month- something Bee has done at least twice over the past couple of years). But, it is a truth universally understood that comedy PERFORMING ability does not necessarily translate to comedy WRITING ability, at least apart from one's own routines (see: Joan Rivers... while you still can!) But, Bee is easily as at home in front of a keyboard as she is in front of a screen... or a bassinette. This collection of memoirs is, by turns, EXTREMELY funny... and MOVING... and, at times, INFURIATING. All of which is to say that Bee can keep dropping her (Canadian) Anchor Babies here as long as she wants.

Funny book - Anne Masterson - CT United States
I am a big fan of "The Daily Show" and find Samantha Bee's reports to either be hysterically funny or not so much. I didn't know what to expect with this book, but I enjoyed her contributions to the Daily Show's "America" book.

I am happy to report that I found most of the book hysterically funny. Even when writing about the dysfunction of her family, she does so with a combination of love and humor. Other reviewers have stated they didn't think it could possibly be that bad. Maybe it was embellished a bit for comic relief, but what comes through clearly in the stories is she loves these people, so I don't think she would print falsehoods to hurt them.

This is not a biography, but a series of vignettes of events in her life. Most are extremely funny, but some miss the mark. For me it was a chapter about her cat. I wish Amazon allowed half stars, as I would give this a four and a half star rating.

This book was HYSTERICAL - RobinGK -
I purchased this book because I really enjoy Samantha's "reports" on the Daily Show and saw a review in a magazine that it was really funny. I ordered the book, and by the end of the first chapter had tears rolling down my face, and could barely continue reading - refreshing, funny, and just a GREAT read! The only part of the book I didn't like was that it had to end! If you enjoy good, smart humor - get this book!!!!!
